| Diagnostic characters : | Deciduous trees, bole fluted, bark flaky, twigs angular. Leaves simple, opposite without laminar dots and glands. Stipules absent. Flowers large, purple. Fruit a capsule, seeds winged. |
| Habit : | Deciduous tree up to 15 m tall. |
| Trunk & bark : | Bole straight or leaning, often fluted, bark pale grey or brown, flaking. |
| Branches and branchlets or twigs : | Twigs angular, glabrous. |
| Exudates : | Exudate absent. |
| Leaves : | Leaves simple, alternate, glabrous, elliptic, apex obtuse and acuminate, base attenuate, margin entire. Midrib flat above, secondary veins obtuse, widely parallel, tertiary veins oblique. Stipules absent. |
| Inflorescences or flowers : | Flowers violet-pink, arranged in a many-flowered terminal panicle, bisexual, pedicels longer than 0,5 cm. |
| Fruits : | Fruit capsule, up to 4 cm long, with 5-6 large teeth, splitting into 5 - 6 sections. |
