Botanical descriptions :

Habit : Trees up to 8 m tall.
Trunk & Bark : Trunk with branched and simple thorns; bark brownish, smooth; blaze cream.
Branches and Branchlets : Young branchlets terete, fulvous hirsute.
Leaves : Leaves simple, alternate, distichous; petiole 0.4-0.9 cm long, planoconvex in cross section, pubescent; lamina 7-18 x 4-8 cm, narrow elliptic-oblong, apex acuminate, base acute, margin crenate, coriaceous, pubescent on midrib beneath, sometimes on nerves also, drying brown, coriaceous; midrib flat or slightly raised above; 3-5_nerved_at_base; secondary_nerves 4-9 pairs; tertiary_nerves reticulo-percurrent.
Inflorescence / Flower : Flowers unisexual, dioecious in axillary cymes.
Fruit and Seed : Berry, red when ripe, globose, fleshy; 1-seeded.

Ecology :

Understorey trees in evergreen to semi-evergreen forests up to 900 m.

Distribution :

Endemic to the Western_Ghats- common trees in South, Central and south Maharashtra Sahyadris.
