Botanical descriptions :

Habit : Trees, up to 20 m tall.
Trunk & Bark : Bark smooth, brownish black.
Branches and Branchlets : Branchlets puberulous, later glabrous.
Leaves : Leaves simple, alternate, distichous; petioles ca. 0.5 cm long; lamina 15-26 x 6-8.5 cm, oblong or elliptic-lanceolate, apex acuminate, acumen to 3 cm long, base rounded or truncate, glabrous, midrib impressed above, secondary_nerves 10-14 pairs, tertiary_nerves reticulate.
Inflorescence / Flower : Flowers on twigs solitary and/or up to 10 in fascicles on tubercles of the trunk; pedicels 4-5.5 cm long and 2-3 mm across.
Fruit and Seed : Cluster of berries, up to 7, oblong-ovoid, glabrous, 3 x 2.5 cm, stalks ca. 1.8 cm long; seeds oblong.

Ecology :

Rare in wet evergreen forests between 600 and 1000 m.

Distribution :

Endemic to the Western_Ghats- Recorded only in Shendurni, Agasthyamalai Hills.

Status :

Endangered (IUCN, 2000).
