Botanical descriptions :

Habit : Large shrubs or small trees, up to 5m tall.
Branches and Branchlets : Branchlets terete, rugose.
Leaves : Leaves simple, alternate, distichous; petioles 0.3- 0.7 cm long; lamina 5-10 x 2-4 cm, ovate, lanceolate or elliptic-lanceolate, apex caudate-acuminate, base subcuneate, glabrous; secondary_nerves ca. 6 pairs, not prominent; tertiary_nerves reticulate.
Inflorescence / Flower : Flowers solitary, axillary or extra-axillary, purplish green; pedicels 0.5-1.0 cm long.
Fruit and Seed : Clustered 1-2 seeded berries, globose or subglobose, apiculate, red.

Ecology :

Understorey tree mostly in dry evergreen forests at 900-1600 m.

Distribution :

Endemic to the Western_Ghats- on the eastern slopes of Agasthyamalai Hills, Varushanad Hills and Nilgiris.

Status :

Vulnerable (IUCN, 2000).
